Inside a Dick’s Sporting Goods Megastore, Complete With an Ice Rink and Climbing Wall

Dick’s Sporting Goods launched House of Sport megastores with added sports facilities. These stores are 40% larger and generate over twice the revenue of smaller locations. Despite higher construction costs, the expanded format proved profitable. The concept, driven by Stack, helped attract schools and sports leagues, boosting success.

Dick’s Sporting Goods has upgraded their store in Victor, N.Y., to a megastore by adding new rock climbing facilities, golf simulator, and an outdoor running and field track. This new store from Dick’s is called the House of Sport and it is expanding in quantity.

House of Sport is being opened to mend the original stores’ small aisle sizes and crowded displays. The area of the House of Sport ranges between 120,000 and 140,000 square feet, a 40% increase from the previous stores. While it costs $15.5 million more to construct each House of Sport, the benefits have been evident, granting Dick’s $35 million in revenue compared to smaller stores' $14 million.

Stack, one who was all behind the creation of Dick’s, suggested that he expanded larger stores to be safe from the competition in the market of shopping. Through the facilities that Stack envisioned, they led to an increase in revenue as the facilities helped the customers in schools and sports leagues. The new and upgraded Dick’s Sporting Goods stores have turned into a huge success, making more revenue through the idea of expansion and augmentation of facilities for the customers.
