The Bitcoin Standard

Written by Saifedean Ammous
Money was created to fix the problems with bartering, like how both people need to want exactly what the other has at the same time. Good money makes trade easier, holds its value over time, and gives people a way to compare prices. In the past, the best kinds of money were things that were rare, durable, and widely accepted—gold became the most popular because it was hard to produce and didn’t lose value easily. Over time, governments took control of gold reserves and replaced them with paper money (fiat currency), which led to inflation and economic instability.
Bitcoin was created to solve these problems. It’s a digital currency that isn’t controlled by any government and has a fixed supply of 21 million coins, meaning it can’t be easily inflated. It runs on blockchain technology, which makes it secure and transparent, with transactions verified by miners through a process called proof of work. Bitcoin could be useful for storing value, making fast international payments, and reducing reliance on government-controlled money. However, it still faces challenges like government regulations, security risks, and price fluctuations. While Bitcoin might not fully replace traditional money, it has the potential to become an important financial system in the future.
