AI, Defense, Biotech, and Nuclear Innovation Define June’s Startup Momentum

In June 2025, startup funding surged across defense, biotech, and clean energy sectors. Onebrief raised $20 million for military collaboration software, while Standard Nuclear secured $42 million for advanced reactor fuel. Biotech firm Parallel Bio gained $21 million to expand AI-based “human-first” drug discovery, and Tombot raised $6.1 million for its robotic companion dog. The wave reflects growing investor focus on AI-driven innovation in critical industries.

June 2025 saw a burst of funding for startups pushing technological frontiers across sectors as varied as defense planning, biotech, and clean energy. Honolulu-based Onebrief, a military software company, raised $20 million at a $1.1 billion valuation, expanding its cloud-based collaboration tools already adopted by several U.S. combatant commands. The surge reflects booming investor confidence in defense tech, which has already drawn $5.8 billion this year. On the softer side, Tombot secured $6.1 million for its lifelike robotic puppy companion “Jennie,” designed to support seniors and dementia patients who can’t care for live pets. Meanwhile, Oak Ridge-based Standard Nuclear emerged from stealth with $42 million to scale its TRISO nuclear fuel — a resilient, high-temperature material now key to advanced reactor designs and U.S. energy security efforts.

In biotech, Parallel Bio raised $21 million to pioneer “human-first” drug discovery by replacing animal testing with AI-driven organoid models that simulate real human biology. Its technology is already helping eight pharmaceutical companies advance more than 50 drugs and immunotherapies. In sports technology, Boston’s SportsVisio attracted $3.2 million to expand its AI analytics platform, which captures and analyzes amateur sports performances in real time for more than 150 teams worldwide. Together, these ventures capture a broader theme of 2025’s startup landscape: the merging of AI with critical sectors like defense, health, and energy, signaling a shift toward innovation that balances human needs with technological resilience.
